About forest materials companies in India
Forest materials companies in India make paper, paperboard and newsprint, deal in timber, wood and pulp, and make jute goods. NSE's industry classification groups them in the Forest Materials sector, part of Commodities, and this page ranks the listed ones by market cap.
What the sector covers
The sector has one industry, Paper, Forest & Jute Products, so every company on the page carries that label and there is no industry filter. It splits into three basic industries: paper and paper products, covering makers of paper and paper boards; forest products, covering companies that deal in timber, wood, pulp, cork and shellac; and jute and jute products. JK Paper and West Coast Paper Mills are examples of the paper mills.
The classification places plywood and laminate makers under Consumer Durables, so the large plywood companies are not on this page.
Paper and paperboard
Paper mills use one of three fibre sources: wood pulp made from plantation wood, agricultural residue such as bagasse and wheat straw, or recovered waste paper. Writing and printing paper, tissue and newsprint come from the first two or from waste paper. Kraft paper and boxboard, used for corrugated boxes, mostly use waste paper.
What drives these businesses
Fibre cost and supply matter most. India has limited forest land for pulpwood, so mills rely on farm-grown wood, residue and imported waste paper and pulp, and the price of these inputs moves margins. Energy and chemicals are the other large costs.
Imports are a recurring issue. The paper industry association IPMA has reported record imports of paper and paperboard, from China and ASEAN countries in particular, and has asked for import duties and quality controls.
Demand follows packaging, publishing and education: corrugated boxes for goods sold online and in shops, and writing and printing paper for books and notebooks.
