About PSU stocks

PSU stocks are shares of listed public sector undertakings, companies in which the central and state governments together hold 51% or more of the shares. The page lists every listed company that passes this test, ranked by market cap, largest first, with the government's holding beside each.

What a PSU is

A PSU, or public sector undertaking, is a company owned mainly by government. This page counts a company as one when the central and state governments together hold 51% or more of its shares. Only the shares governments hold directly count, so a company held through another PSU appears only if governments themselves hold 51%.

How the page decides

The page adds the government's shares held as promoter and as public holders, and divides by total shares. A company is listed when that figure is 51% or more. Govt of promoters is a separate column: government promoter shares divided by total promoter shares, times 100.

Government holding and public shareholding

Listed companies must keep at least 25% of their shares with the public. The central government may exempt a company that it or a state government controls from that rule, and some PSUs show a government holding above 75%. Sales of government shares to the public are known as disinvestment, and they lower the holding shown on the page.

Market cap and P/E in the list

Market cap is share price times the number of shares. P/E is market cap divided by the profit of the last twelve months that belongs to the company's own shareholders. Banks, utilities, oil and gas, power, defence and mining companies are among the sectors the list covers, and the sector filter narrows it.
