About paint companies in India

Paint companies in India are the listed companies that the exchanges classify as paint makers. This page lists them largest first by market cap, with price, one-day and one-year change, P/E and ROCE.

What the list includes

Every company the exchanges place in the paints sub-industry appears, from Asian Paints and Berger Paints to micro-cap names. Market cap is the share price times the number of shares, which is what the whole company is worth at that price. There is no size, price or profit cut-off.

How the figures are worked out

P/E is market cap divided by the last twelve months' profit attributable to the company's own shareholders. ROCE (return on capital employed) is operating profit after depreciation as a share of the capital the business uses; lease liabilities are not counted. Price changes are adjusted for splits and bonuses and leave out dividends. A dash means no figure is shown, for example when profit is a loss so P/E does not apply.

Decorative and industrial paint

Decorative paint is sold for homes and buildings: emulsions, enamels, primers, putty and waterproofing. Industrial paint and coatings go to carmakers, appliance makers and manufacturers of machinery and metal goods. The mix changes what moves a company's revenue.

Costs and demand

Raw materials are a large share of cost, and many of them are made from crude oil, so oil prices feed into them. Companies change prices and product mix to cope with swings in these inputs. Housing drives demand: new homes need paint, as they need tiles, sanitary ware and furniture.
