About the Nifty Realty
The Nifty Realty is an index of 10 real estate companies listed on the National Stock Exchange of India, designed to reflect how that sector behaves and performs. It is maintained by NSE Indices Limited.
How companies are chosen
The Nifty Realty covers companies engaged in construction of residential and commercial real estate properties.
A company must be part of the Nifty 500 at the time of review, belong to the Realty sector, have traded at least 90% of the time in the last six months and have a listing history of at least 1 month on the cutoff date.
Where fewer than 10 eligible stocks of a sector sit within the Nifty 500, the shortfall is filled from the top 800 stocks ranked by average daily turnover and average daily full market capitalisation over the previous six months. The final 10 are picked by free-float market capitalisation.
How it is weighted
Each company is weighted by its free-float market capitalisation, the value of the shares normally expected to be available for trading. At the time of rebalancing no single stock can exceed 33%, and the top 3 stocks together cannot exceed 62%.
When it is reviewed
The index is rebalanced twice a year, with cut-off dates of 31 Jan and 31 Jul, using average data for the six months ending the cut-off date. The market gets four weeks' notice before a change.
Base date and value
The index has a base date of 29 Dec 2006 and a base value of 1000. It was launched on 30 Aug 2007.
