About diversified companies in India

Diversified companies in India are listed businesses that run several unrelated lines of business, with no single one earning more than half of their revenue. NSE's industry classification places them in its Diversified sector, and this page ranks those that traded on the latest trading day by market cap.

What the sector covers

The classification places every listed company by the business segment that earns more than half of its revenue. A company goes into Diversified when no segment does and at least two segments each bring in 20% or more of total revenue.

The sector has one industry and one basic industry, both called Diversified, so the page has a single table with no industry filter. Its members run activities as far apart as industrial products, chemicals, logistics, healthcare and investment holdings.

How the page measures them

The table has two views. Valuation shows price, market cap, P/E, ROCE, dividend yield and the one-year return. Latest quarter shows the same companies against their most recent quarterly results. The sector summary adds up market cap and profit over the companies that filed the latest quarter, shows revenue growth against the same quarter a year earlier, and takes the median, the middle company's figure, for P/E, P/B and ROCE.

Diversified and conglomerate

A conglomerate is a group that owns businesses in unrelated industries. The two words overlap but are not the same. The Diversified sector is a classification slot defined by revenue shares, so a large group sits in another sector when one segment brings in more than half its revenue, and a small company with mixed activities can sit here.

What drives diversified companies

There is no single driver. Each member's results follow its own mix of businesses, and a fall in one segment can be offset by another. Holding-style companies also earn from dividends and gains on their investments in group companies.

The sector is small, so one large member moves its totals and medians far more than in a sector of hundreds of companies.
