About construction materials companies in India
Construction materials companies in India make cement and the other materials that go into buildings, roads and bridges. NSE's industry classification groups them in the Construction Materials sector, part of Commodities, and this page ranks the listed ones by market cap.
What the sector covers
The classification has two industries in this sector. Cement and Cement Products covers makers, suppliers and distributors of cement and cement products. Other Construction Materials covers suppliers of other building inputs such as sand. An industry filter on the page narrows the table to either group.
Granite, marble and ceramic tile companies are classified outside the sector, under Furniture, Home Furnishing, Flooring in Consumer Discretionary.
What drives cement businesses
India is the world's second-largest cement producer after China, and cement sells mostly in regional markets because it is heavy and costly to move far. A plant's prices therefore follow demand and capacity in its own region, and freight is a large part of its costs.
Demand comes from housing, roads, railways and other public construction, and it falls in the monsoon months when building slows. Costs are set by power, coal and petroleum coke for the kilns, limestone and freight.
On 22 Sep 2025 the GST rate on cement fell from 28% to 18%, a decision of the GST Council meeting of 3 Sep 2025. GST is the indirect tax added to the selling price, so the cut lowered the tax in what a buyer pays for a bag.
Capital and returns
A cement plant costs a great deal to build before it sells a bag, so the capital a company runs on is large next to its yearly profit. The page shows the sector's median ROCE for the latest full year. ROCE, return on capital employed, is operating profit after depreciation as a percentage of net worth plus borrowings, and the median is the middle company's figure, so one very large company does not set it.
