About hospital stocks in India

Hospital stocks in India are the listed companies that own and run hospitals. This page lists every one of them under the Healthcare sector, largest by market cap first, with price, market cap, P/E, ROCE and one-day and one-year share price change.

What the page lists

The page applies one rule: the company's sub-industry is Hospital. It can be narrowed by name, sector and size, and the tabs above the table switch the columns to valuation, returns, profitability, growth, ownership and other views.

What counts as a hospital company

A company is placed by the business that brings in more than half of its revenue, so a group whose hospitals earn most of its revenue appears here. Medicine makers sit in a separate industry, Pharmaceuticals & Biotechnology, and the group is narrower than a list of every healthcare company.

How the columns are worked out

Market cap is the share price times the number of shares. P/E is market cap divided by the last twelve months' profit that belongs to the company's own shareholders, after the share of minority owners in subsidiaries. A dash appears where no P/E exists, as for a loss.

ROCE, return on capital employed, is operating profit after depreciation, leaving out other income and one-off items, as a percentage of net worth (with minority interests) plus borrowings. Lease liabilities are not counted. The 1D and 1Y changes are share price changes adjusted for splits and bonuses, without dividends.

What drives hospital businesses

A hospital earns from the beds it can fill and what each filled bed brings in. Companies report occupancy, the share of beds in use, and revenue per occupied bed. Growth comes mainly from adding beds.

Limits of the figures

A hospital group may also run other businesses, such as pharmacies or labs, and their profit sits inside the same P/E. New hospitals take time to fill, so recent profit may not show their full earning. Lease liabilities are not counted in capital employed, so ROCE for an operator that leases its buildings is not like for like with one that owns them.
