About automobile companies in India
Automobile companies in India are the listed makers of cars, utility vehicles, two-wheelers and three-wheelers, the dealers that sell them, and the makers of the parts that go into vehicles. NSE's industry classification calls this the Automobile and Auto Components sector, part of Consumer Discretionary.
What the sector covers
NSE's classification splits the sector into two industries. Automobiles covers makers of passenger cars and utility vehicles (buses, taxis and auto rickshaws included), makers of two- and three-wheelers, and vehicle dealers. Auto Components covers parts and equipment sold mainly to the auto industry, such as engines, brakes, batteries, castings and forgings, along with tyres and rubber products and parts traders.
Trucks, tractors and construction vehicles are not in this sector: their makers are classed under Capital Goods, in Industrials. Bicycles sit in Consumer Durables. An industry filter on the page narrows the table to Automobiles or Auto Components.
Vehicle makers and component suppliers
A vehicle maker, also called an original equipment manufacturer (OEM), designs the vehicle, assembles it and sells it through dealers. A component supplier sells parts to several OEMs, and to the replacement market where owners buy parts for older vehicles. A supplier therefore depends on how many vehicles the sector builds, while an OEM depends on how many of its own models it sells.
What drives automobile businesses
Sales volumes follow household spending and the cost of owning a vehicle: loan rates, fuel prices, insurance and tax. On 22 Sep 2025 GST on small petrol and diesel cars, motorcycles up to 350cc and three-wheelers fell from 28% to 18%, while larger cars and bigger motorcycles moved to a single 40% rate and electric vehicles stayed at 5%.
The shift to electric vehicles changes what a vehicle is made of. Engines, gearboxes and exhaust parts matter less in an electric vehicle, and batteries, motors and power electronics matter more. The government's production-linked incentive scheme for the sector has an outlay of ₹25,938 Cr and requires at least 50% domestic value addition. Raw materials such as steel, aluminium, rubber and chips set input costs.
How this page ranks companies
Each row carries price, market cap, P/E, ROCE, dividend yield and one-year return, largest market cap first; market cap is share price multiplied by the number of shares. P/E is market cap divided by the last four quarters' profit and P/B is market cap divided by net worth attributable to the company's own shareholders. The summary shows the median of each.
ROCE, return on capital employed, is operating profit after depreciation divided by net worth plus borrowings, with lease liabilities not counted. Revenue growth compares each quarter with the same quarter a year earlier over the companies that filed both. The page also links Nifty Auto and BSE Auto.
