About consumer services companies in India

Consumer services companies in India are the listed businesses that sell straight to households through shops, websites, hotels, restaurants, travel services and schools. NSE's industry classification groups them as the Consumer Services sector, part of Consumer Discretionary, and the page ranks them by market cap.

What the sector covers

NSE's classification splits the sector into three industries. Retailing holds speciality retail, pharmacy retail, department-style diversified retail and e-commerce. Leisure Services holds hotels and resorts, restaurants, amusement parks, travel services, and gyms and salons. Other Consumer Services holds education, e-learning and a catch-all for services that fit nowhere else.

An industry filter on the page narrows the table to Retailing, Leisure Services or Other Consumer Services.

How a company is placed here

NSE Indices assigns each company to the basic industry that describes its main business. Where a company has several businesses, the one that brings in more than half of revenue decides.

What drives these businesses

Consumer Discretionary means spending that households can postpone, such as eating out, holidays and non-essential shopping, so demand follows household income and confidence. Retailers are read by store count, sales per square foot and same-store growth, the sales growth of stores open for at least a year. Hotels are read by occupancy and average room rate.

Costs are mostly rent, staff and, for retailers, stock. Many companies here lease their premises, so rent and interest on lease liabilities weigh on profit. ROCE on this page leaves lease liabilities out of capital, which matters for lease-heavy retailers and restaurants.

How this page ranks companies

The table puts the largest market cap first, market cap being share price times shares outstanding, and the summary gives medians, the middle company's figure. P/E is market cap divided by the last four quarters' profit; P/B is market cap divided by net worth attributable to the company's own shareholders. ROCE is operating profit after depreciation, leaving out other income and one-offs, divided by net worth including minority interests plus borrowings.

The quarterly charts add up revenue over the companies that filed both a quarter and the one a year earlier, and profit after tax with losses counted as negative. A quarter appears once at least 60% of the sector has filed it.
