About IT companies in India
IT companies in India are the listed companies in the Information Technology sector: software development and consulting, software products, IT-enabled services and computer hardware. The page ranks them by market cap, with price, P/E, ROCE, dividend yield and one-year return, and splits the sector into IT - Software, IT - Services and IT - Hardware.
What the sector covers
In NSE's industry classification, Information Technology is both a macro-economic sector and a sector, with three industries. IT - Software holds two basic industries: software development, IT consulting and data analytics, where the large outsourcing firms sit, and software products. IT - Services holds IT-enabled services, which run clients' business processes on IT infrastructure. IT - Hardware holds makers and distributors of computers, servers, networking equipment and printers. A company is placed by the business that brings in more than half of its revenue.
How the page is built
The table ranks companies by market cap, share price multiplied by shares outstanding, and switches between a valuation view and a latest-quarter view. Median P/E takes each company's market value divided by its last four quarters' profit and reports the middle figure; median P/B does the same with market cap divided by net worth attributable to the company's own shareholders.
ROCE (return on capital employed) is operating profit after depreciation, leaving out other income and one-off items, divided by net worth plus borrowings. Lease liabilities are left out because filings do not state them. Sector revenue growth adds up revenue over the companies that filed both a quarter and the same quarter a year earlier. Profit is summed after tax, with losses counted as negative.
Sector indices
The page also links the sector's indices: Nifty IT, BSE Focused IT, BSE Information Technology and BSE MidSmall IT. Nifty IT holds 10 companies chosen from the Nifty 500 by free-float market cap, and its base date is 1 Jan 1996.
What drives IT businesses
Large Indian IT services companies earn most of their revenue in dollars, pounds and euros from clients abroad and pay most costs in rupees, so the exchange rate moves reported margins. Revenue depends on clients' technology budgets, mainly in the United States and Europe, and on how many staff the companies can bill, which makes headcount and wages the largest cost.
Nasscom, the industry body, put the Indian technology industry's revenue at about $315 billion for the year to Mar 2026, up 6.1%, with exports near $246 billion and about 59.5 lakh direct employees.
Reading a quarter
IT companies report quarterly, and the sector view needs enough filings to be meaningful. Quarterly charts on the page leave out any quarter that fewer than 60% of the sector has filed, and the newest quarter is added once nearly as many companies have filed it as the prior quarter.
