About the Nifty Pharma
Nifty Pharma is an index of 20 pharmaceutical companies listed on the National Stock Exchange of India (NSE), maintained by NSE Indices Limited. It captures the performance of the pharmaceutical sector.
How companies are chosen
The index is designed for companies engaged in manufacturing pharmaceuticals and biotechnology, and since Sep 2021 it holds a maximum of 20 stocks.
Companies must form part of the Nifty 500 at the time of review. If fewer than 20 eligible stocks from the sector are in the Nifty 500, the shortfall is filled from the top 800 stocks ranked by both average daily turnover and average daily full market capitalisation over the previous six months.
A company must belong to the pharmaceutical sector, have a trading frequency of at least 90% in the last six months and a listing history of at least 1 month at the cutoff date.
The final 20 are chosen by free-float market capitalization, with a preference for companies available for trading in NSE's Futures & Options segment at the time of final selection.
How it is weighted
Each stock is weighted by its free-float market capitalization, the market value of only the shares available for trading. At the time of rebalancing, no single stock may be more than 33% and the top 3 stocks together may not be more than 62%.
When it is reviewed
The index is rebalanced semi-annually, with cut-off dates of 31 Jan and 31 Jul each year, using average data for the six months ending on the cut-off date.
Base date and value
The index launched on 1 Jul 2005, with a base date of 1 Jan 2001 and a base value of 1000.
