About the Nifty Media
The Nifty Media index holds at most 15 media and entertainment stocks listed on NSE, including printing and publishing companies, and is maintained by NSE Indices Limited.
How companies are chosen
A company must be in the Media sector, which includes advertising, be part of the Nifty 500 at the time of review, have a trading frequency of at least 90% in the last six months, and have a listing history of at least 1 month at the cut-off date.
If the Nifty 500 holds fewer than 10 eligible media stocks, the shortfall is filled from the top 800 companies ranked on both average daily turnover and average daily full market capitalisation. The final selection is made on free-float market capitalisation.
How it is weighted
The index uses a periodic capped free float method. Each stock is weighted by its free-float market capitalisation, the value of the shares that can actually trade, with no single stock above 33% and the top 3 stocks together no more than 62% at rebalancing.
When it is reviewed
The index is rebalanced semi-annually, with cut-off dates of 31 Jan and 31 Jul, using average data for the six months ending on the cut-off date. Four weeks of prior notice is given to the market before a change.
Base date and value
The index was launched on 19 Jul 2011 with a base date of 30 Dec 2005 and a base value of 1000.
