About the Nifty Consumer Durables
The Nifty Consumer Durables Index measures the performance of companies in the consumer durables industry. It holds a maximum of 15 listed companies and is maintained by NSE Indices Limited.
How companies are chosen
A company must form part of the Nifty 500 at the time of reconstitution and belong to the consumer durables industry. Up to 15 are then chosen by free-float market capitalisation.
The basic industries that qualify include Ceramics, Consumer Electronics, Household Appliances, Sanitary Ware, and Gems, Jewellery And Watches.
How it is weighted
Each stock is weighted by its free-float market capitalisation: the value of the shares available for trading, which leaves out holdings such as the promoters'.
At the time of rebalancing, no single stock may weigh more than 33% and the top 3 stocks together may not weigh more than 62%.
When it is reviewed
The index is rebalanced semi-annually. The cut-off dates are 31 Jan and 31 Jul each year, using average data for the six months ending the cut-off date. The market gets four weeks' prior notice of a change.
Base date and value
The base date is 1 Apr 2005 and the base value is 1000. The index launched on 15 Jan 2020.
