About the Nifty Auto
The Nifty Auto is an index of 15 companies from the Automobiles sector, which includes makers of cars and motorcycles, heavy vehicles, auto ancillaries, tyres, etc. NSE Indices Limited manages it.
How companies are chosen
The index holds 15 companies, chosen by free-float market capitalization. Where fewer than 10 eligible stocks sit within the Nifty 500, the shortfall is drawn from the top 800 ranked on both average daily turnover and average daily full market capitalisation.
To be eligible, a company must be in the Nifty 500 at the time of review, belong to the Automobiles sector, have a trading frequency of at least 90% in the last six months and a listing history of at least 1 month at the cut-off date.
How it is weighted
Each stock is weighted by its free-float market capitalization, the value of the shares available for trading. At rebalancing no single stock can weigh more than 33%, and the top 3 stocks together cannot weigh more than 62%.
When it is reviewed
The index is rebalanced semi-annually, with cut-off dates of 31 Jan and 31 Jul, and the market gets four weeks' notice before a change.
Base date and value
The base date is 1 Jan 2004 with a base value of 1000. The index launched on 12 Jul 2011.
