About construction companies in India

Construction companies in India are the listed businesses that build roads, bridges, railways, dams, canals and other civil works, mostly as contractors for governments and public agencies. NSE's industry classification places them in the Construction sector, part of Industrials, and this page ranks them by market cap.

What the sector covers

NSE's classification has four levels: macro-economic sector, sector, industry and basic industry. Construction is a sector under Industrials with one industry and one basic industry, Civil Construction: designing, building and maintaining roads, bridges, canals and dams, including engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) projects.

A company is placed by the business that brings in more than half of its revenue. Builders of homes and offices are classed as Realty, under Consumer Discretionary, and operators of toll roads under Services.

EPC contracts

In an EPC contract the contractor designs the project, buys the materials and equipment, and builds it for a contract price; the client owns the finished asset.

What drives construction businesses

Revenue follows public spending. The Union Budget presented on 1 Feb 2026 put the Centre's capital expenditure for the year to Mar 2027 at ₹12.2 lakh crore. Awards come first and revenue follows as work is done, so the order book, the value of contracts won but not yet executed, shows how many years of work a company has in hand.

Timing matters as much as the size of orders. For national highway tenders issued from 1 Jun 2025, the road ministry requires over 90% of the route's land to be acquired before the award, so that work can start soon after it.

Steel, cement, bitumen and labour set costs, and many contracts are paid by government bodies after work is certified, so unpaid bills and borrowing for working capital weigh on profit.

How this page ranks companies

The table ranks companies by market cap, share price multiplied by shares outstanding. The summary shows medians, the middle company's figure: P/E is market cap divided by the last four quarters' profit, P/B is market cap divided by net worth attributable to the company's own shareholders, and ROCE (return on capital employed) is operating profit after depreciation divided by net worth plus borrowings, with lease liabilities left out.

Revenue growth compares each quarter with the same quarter a year earlier. The trend chart leaves out a quarter until at least 60% of the sector's companies have filed it.
