About the Nifty Metal
Nifty Metal is an index of up to 15 stocks listed on the National Stock Exchange that reflects the behaviour and performance of the metals sector, including mining. It is managed by NSE Indices Limited.
How companies are chosen
The industries that qualify are aluminium, copper, zinc, diversified metals, ferro and silica manganese, industrial minerals, iron and steel and their products, pig iron, sponge iron, precious metals, and trading in metals and minerals.
A company must form part of the Nifty 500 at the time of review, belong to the metals sector, have traded at least 90% of the time in the last six months and have a listing history of at least 1 month at the cut-off date. If fewer than 10 eligible stocks of the sector sit in the Nifty 500, the shortfall is filled from the top 800 stocks ranked on both average daily turnover and average daily full market capitalisation over the previous six months. Final selection is by free-float market capitalisation, which counts only the shares available for public trading.
How it is weighted
The index level reflects the total free-float market value of its stocks relative to a base market capitalisation value. At each rebalancing no single stock may weigh more than 33%, and the top 3 stocks together may not weigh more than 62%.
When it is reviewed
The index is rebalanced every six months on data to 31 Jan and 31 Jul.
Base date and value
The index has a base date of 1 Jan 2004 and a base value of 1000, and was launched on 12 Jul 2011.
