About oil and gas companies in India
Oil and gas companies in India find and produce crude oil and natural gas, refine crude into fuels, move and sell petrol, diesel and gas, and mine coal. NSE's industry classification calls this the Oil, Gas and Consumable Fuels sector, within Energy, and this page ranks the listed companies by market cap.
Industries in the sector
The sector has four industries, and an industry filter narrows the table to any one. Petroleum Products covers refiners, fuel marketers and makers of lubricants. Oil covers explorers and producers, offshore drilling contractors, oil storage and transport, and oilfield equipment and services. Gas covers gas transmission and marketing, suppliers of LPG, CNG, piped gas and LNG, industrial gases and gas trading. Consumable Fuels covers the mining, trading and distribution of coal, coke and lignite.
Upstream, midstream and downstream
Upstream means finding and producing crude oil and gas from fields. Midstream means moving it, by pipeline, tanker or gas grid. Downstream means refining crude into petrol, diesel, aviation fuel and petrochemical inputs, and selling the products through retail outlets. A company can span all three, and its industry on this page follows the business that earns most of its revenue.
What drives these businesses
India imported 88.2% of the crude oil it used in the year to Mar 2025 and about 51% of its natural gas, so international crude and gas prices, and the rupee against the dollar, reach every company in the sector. Producers earn more when prices rise. Refiners earn the margin between the crude they buy and the products they sell, and fuel retailers' margins depend on how far pump prices move when crude moves.
The government shapes the sector directly. Crude oil, petrol, diesel, aviation fuel and natural gas stay outside GST until a date the GST Council proposes for bringing them in is notified, so petrol and diesel carry central excise duty and state VAT instead.
Coal miners in Consumable Fuels sell mostly to power plants, so their volumes follow electricity demand.
