About the Nifty Bank

The Nifty Bank is an index of the most liquid and large Indian banking stocks, with at most 14 companies listed on the National Stock Exchange of India (NSE). It is maintained by NSE Indices Limited.

How companies are chosen

A company must be part of the Nifty 500 at the time of review and belong to the banking sector. The basic industries counted as banking are Other Bank, Private Sector Bank and Public Sector Bank. If fewer than 10 banks qualify within the Nifty 500, the rest come from the top 800 companies ranked on both average daily turnover and average daily full market capitalisation.

A company needs a trading frequency of at least 90% in the last six months and a listing history of at least 1 month at the cut-off date.

Banks allowed to trade in the Futures & Options segment are preferred, and the final 14 are chosen by free-float market capitalization. The free float counts the shares reported under the public category and leaves out those reported under the promoter category. A bank outside that segment is eligible only if the number of times it hit its upper or lower price band in the past 6 months is below 20% of the trading days in that period.

How it is weighted

The index is computed by the free float market capitalization method. The weight of the largest stock is capped at 19%, the second at 14% and the third at 10%.

Stocks outside the Futures & Options segment are capped together at 10% and individually at 4.5%.

When it is reviewed

The index is re-balanced twice a year, on average data for the six months ending the cut-off dates of 31 Jan and 31 Jul. The market gets four weeks of notice before a change.

Base date and value

The index launched on 15 Sep 2003. Its base date is 1 Jan 2000 and its base value is 1000.
