About capital goods stocks in India

Capital goods stocks in India are listed companies that make machinery, equipment and components that other businesses use to produce goods or provide services. NSE's industry classification places them in the Capital Goods sector, which sits under Industrials.

What the sector covers

Capital goods are products bought by businesses, not households: turbines, cables, cranes, tractors, castings, elevators, wagons, ships and defence equipment. NSE's classification groups them into five industries: Industrial Products, Industrial Manufacturing, Electrical Equipment, Aerospace & Defense, and Agricultural, Commercial & Construction Vehicles. This page lists every company in the sector whose shares traded on the latest trading day, largest by market cap first, and each can be filtered by industry.

Industries in the sector

Industrial Products is the widest industry. It holds cables, castings and forgings, packaging, industrial plastic products, rubber and other industrial products. Industrial Manufacturing covers industrial equipment and electronics, railway wagons and shipbuilding. Electrical Equipment splits into heavy equipment such as turbines, generators and transformers, and other electrical components. Aerospace & Defense covers civil and military aerospace and defence equipment and electronics. The vehicles industry covers tractors, commercial vehicles such as trucks, construction vehicles such as cranes, and their dealers.

What drives these businesses

Demand for capital goods follows spending by other companies and by governments on factories, power plants, railways, ports, mines, farms and defence. Orders are often placed months or years before delivery, so many makers report an order book: contracts won but not yet delivered and billed. Revenue is booked as orders are executed, and customers often pay in stages, so working capital (money tied up in stock and unpaid bills) matters to these companies. Input costs such as steel, copper and aluminium feed into prices, and exports add overseas demand.

Sector figures

The summary takes medians, the middle company's value, so a handful of very large makers do not set them. P/E is market cap divided by the last four quarters' profit, and P/B is market cap divided by the net worth that belongs to the company's own shareholders. ROCE, return on capital employed, is operating profit after depreciation, without other income and one-off items, as a percentage of net worth plus borrowings; for these companies capital employed includes plants and the money tied up in work not yet billed.

Quarterly revenue growth covers companies that filed both the quarter and the same quarter a year earlier, and a loss counts as negative in the profit total. Since revenue is booked as orders are delivered, one quarter can rise or fall with delivery timing, which the ten-quarter chart puts in context. The table has a Valuation view and a Latest quarter view.
