About the Nifty IT
The Nifty IT is an index of 10 Indian IT companies listed on the National Stock Exchange, engaged in activities from software development to hardware and IT infrastructure. It is maintained by NSE Indices Limited.
How companies are chosen
Companies qualify from five industries: computer software and consulting, computer hardware and equipment, education, IT enabled services and software products.
Each company must be part of the Nifty 500 at the time of review, have a trading frequency of at least 90% in the last six months and a listing history of at least 1 month at the cutoff date. If fewer than 10 qualify, the rest come from the top 800 companies by average daily turnover and full market capitalisation.
The final 10 companies are picked by free-float market capitalization, with preference for companies available for trading in NSE's Futures & Options segment.
How it is weighted
Free float is the shares available for trading in the market. Each company is weighted by its free-float market capitalization, capped so that no single company is more than 33% and the top 3 together no more than 62% at each rebalancing.
When it is reviewed
The index is rebalanced semi-annually. The cut-off dates are 31 Jan and 31 Jul of each year.
Base date and value
The base date is 1 Jan 1996 with a base value of 1000. The base value was revised from 1000 to 100 with effect from 28 May 2004.
