About the Nifty MidSmallcap400 50:50
The Nifty MidSmallcap400 50:50 is a capped version of the Nifty MidSmallcap 400 that gives its mid cap and small cap segments equal weight. It held 401 companies on 30 Sep 2026. It is maintained by NSE Indices Limited.
How companies are chosen
Every company in the Nifty MidSmallcap 400 is in this index at all times, so it has no selection rules of its own. The mid cap segment is the companies in the Nifty Midcap 150, and the small cap segment is the companies in the Nifty Smallcap 250.
How it is weighted
The mid cap segment and the small cap segment each carry a total weight of 50% on quarterly rebalance dates. Within a segment, each company is weighted by free-float market capitalization, which counts only the shares available for public trading.
A company with differential voting rights (DVR) shares is placed in the segment of its parent company. The weight of the DVR and its parent is worked out together from their combined free-float market capitalization, then split between them in proportion to each one's free-float market capitalization.
When it is reviewed
Weights are rebalanced on a quarterly basis from the last trading day of Mar, Jun, Sep and Dec. The index follows the composition of the Nifty MidSmallcap 400 at every point, which is reconstituted twice a year, effective from Mar and Sep. Between reviews, a company is removed if it leaves the Nifty MidSmallcap 400 or undergoes suspension, delisting or a scheme of arrangement. Each quarter the index is also screened against the portfolio concentration norms SEBI announced on 10 Jan 2019 for ETFs and index funds.
Base date and value
The index has a base date of 1 Apr 2005 and a base value of 1000. It was launched on 4 Feb 2026. It is calculated in real time. A Total Returns variant, which includes dividends, also exists.
