About the BSE 400 MidSmallCap Index

The BSE 400 MidSmallCap Index tracks the performance of 400 companies: the mid-cap and small-cap companies of the BSE 500, meaning every member of the BSE 500 outside the BSE 100 LargeCap TMC. It is maintained by BSE Index Services Pvt. Ltd., a subsidiary of BSE.

How companies are chosen

The index is derived from the BSE 500. Every BSE 500 company that is not a member of the BSE 100 LargeCap TMC forms the index, so there is no separate ranking step of its own. The same 400 companies are the BSE 150 MidCap together with the BSE 250 SmallCap.

The count of companies stays fixed at 400. Where a company has a DVR (a share class with differential voting rights) that is included, the index can hold more than 400 stocks while still holding 400 companies.

How it is weighted

Members are weighted by float-adjusted market capitalization: each company's market value counting only the shares available for public trading.

When it is reviewed

The index is rebalanced twice a year, in Jun and Dec. Each change takes effect on the Monday following the third Friday of the month, using data as of the last trading day of Apr and Oct.

Base date and value

The index was launched on 30 Nov 2017. Its first value date is 16 Sep 2005, the date from which its history is calculated, with a base value of 1000.
