About the Nifty500 Shariah

The Nifty500 Shariah is an index of the Nifty 500 companies that pass a Shariah screen, meaning a check against Islamic law, calculated by NSE Indices Limited. It has no fixed number of companies: 204 on 30 Sep 2026.

How companies are chosen

The universe is the Nifty 500, which covers more than 90% of the total market capitalization and more than 80% of total traded volume on the National Stock Exchange. A company must also have traded on at least 90% of trading days in the last six months.

The screens are the same for all three Nifty Shariah indices. Taqwaa Advisory and Shariah Investment Solutions (TASIS) runs them. The business screen removes companies primarily in conventional financial services such as banks, insurance companies, finance and investment companies and stock broking, and in gambling and narcotic drugs, among other activities. The financial screen sets interest-based debt at no more than 25% of total assets, interest income plus returns from interest-based investments at no more than 2.5% of total income, and receivables plus cash and bank balances at no more than 90% of total assets.

How it is weighted

Weights follow free-float market capitalization, the market value of the shares available for trading, with no single stock above 33% and the top 3 stocks together at no more than 62% at the time of rebalancing.

When it is reviewed

Shariah compliance screening is carried out every month.

Base date and value

The index has a base date of 29 Dec 2006 and a base value of 1000. It was launched on 19 Feb 2008.
