About the Nifty Commodities
Nifty Commodities is an index of 30 companies listed on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) that represent the commodities segment, which includes sectors like oil, petroleum products, cement, power, chemical, sugar, metals and mining. It is maintained by NSE Indices Limited.
How companies are chosen
Eligible basic industries include aluminium, cement and cement products, coal, commodity chemicals, copper, diversified metals, fertilizers, iron and steel, oil exploration and production, and power generation.
A company must be part of the Nifty 500 at the time of review (a shortfall below 10 eligible stocks in a sector is filled from the top 800 stocks), belong to the commodities sector, have a trading frequency of at least 90% in the last six months and a listing history of at least 1 month at the cut-off date. The final selection is made by free-float market capitalisation.
How it is weighted
Each company is weighted by its free-float market capitalisation, which counts the shares normally expected to be available for trading in the market, capped at 10% of the index.
The cap is reapplied each quarter, from the last trading day of Mar, Jun, Sep and Dec, and a weight may rise above 10% between rebalancings as prices move.
When it is reviewed
The index is rebalanced semi-annually. The cut-off dates are 31 Jan and 31 Jul each year, and the review uses average data for the six months ending on the cut-off date.
Base date and value
The index has a base date of 1 Jan 2004 and a base value of 1000. It was launched on 7 Sep 2011.
