About the Nifty50 Value 20
Nifty50 Value 20 is an index of the 20 most liquid value blue chip companies drawn from the Nifty 50 and listed on NSE. Each company's value score is based on its earnings to price, book value to price and sales to price ratios and its dividend yield.
How companies are chosen
Companies must be part of the Nifty 50 at the time of review and have a minimum listing history of 1 month.
The ratios use the latest fiscal year data, consolidated where available and otherwise standalone.
The top 20 stocks by value score are selected.
How it is weighted
Each ratio becomes a Z score: the stock's ratio minus the mean of the ratio in the eligible universe, divided by the standard deviation of the ratio in that universe. The four Z scores are averaged with a weight of 0.25 each.
The value score is 1 plus the average Z score when that is above 0, and 1 divided by (1 minus the average Z score) when it is below 0.
A stock's weight is its free float market cap multiplied by its value score, and each stock is capped at 15%. The cap is applied semi-annually at rebalancing, so a weight can rise above 15% between rebalancings.
When it is reviewed
The index is reconstituted twice a year, in Jun and Dec, using six months of data ending May and Nov.
At each review, a stock ranked in the top 10 of the eligible universe by value score that is not yet a member is added, replacing the member with the lowest value score. A member ranked beyond 30 is removed and replaced by the next stock in the value score ranking.
An extra reconstitution is started if a constituent is suspended, delisted, goes through a scheme of arrangement or is excluded from the parent index.
Base date and value
The index has a base date of 1 Jan 2009 and a base value of 1000. It launched on 28 Mar 2014.
