About the BSE 200 Equal Weight Index
The BSE 200 Equal Weight Index gives equal weight to each of the 200 companies in the BSE 200, covering all major industries in the Indian economy. It is maintained by BSE Index Services Pvt. Ltd.
How companies are chosen
The index is derived from the constituents of the BSE 500. The number of companies is fixed at 200. Differential voting rights shares (DVRs), a second share class carrying different voting rights, can be included, which makes the count of stocks in the index more than 200 while the company count stays at 200. A DVR qualifies if its ordinary share class is in the index or is added at the same time, its shares outstanding exceed 10% of the ordinary shares outstanding, and it meets the other criteria itself.
At each semi-annual rebalancing, a company must meet two tests. Its annualized traded value must be at least ₹500 crore, and its stock must have traded on at least 90% of trading days at BSE during the six-month reference period. A current constituent stays eligible with an annualized traded value of at least ₹400 crore. Annualized traded value is the median of the monthly medians of daily traded value over the observation period, annualized on 250 trading days a year.
Companies that pass are ranked by average daily total market capitalization, the value of all a company's shares over the six-month period before the rebalancing reference date. The top 160 are selected. Current constituents ranked 161 to 240 are then added in order of rank until the count reaches 200. If the count is still short, non-constituents are added in order of rank. A stock listed for less than six months is measured from its listing date.
How it is weighted
Every constituent is given the same weight at each rebalancing. The equal weights are set from closing prices on the Wednesday before the second Friday of the rebalancing month, so by the rebalancing date the actual weights already differ from equal as prices move.
When it is reviewed
The index is rebalanced twice a year, with changes taking effect on the Monday following the third Friday of Jun and Dec. The reference date for the data is the last trading day of Apr and Oct.
Base date and value
The index was launched on 27 Sep 2024. Its first value date is 1 Aug 2006, and its base value is 1274. It is calculated in real time in rupees and US dollars.
