About the Nifty500 Momentum 50

The Nifty500 Momentum 50 Index tracks the top 50 companies within the Nifty 500, selected on a Normalized Momentum Score built from 6-month and 12-month price return, adjusted for volatility. It is maintained by NSE Indices Limited.

How companies are chosen

Stocks in the Nifty 500 at the time of a review are eligible, with a minimum listing history of 1 year. A stock not yet in the index and outside the Futures & Options (F&O) segment cannot be added if the number of times it hit its upper or lower price limit in the past 6 months was 20% or more of trading days.

A company with more than 20% of promoters' shares pledged cannot be added to the index, nor can a stock in the bottom 10 percentile by 6-month average daily turnover or by turnover ratio.

The 50 eligible stocks with the highest Normalized Momentum Score are selected.

How it is weighted

A stock's momentum ratio is its price return divided by the annualised standard deviation of its daily returns over 1 year, taken for both 12 months and 6 months. Each ratio is converted to a Z score against the mean and standard deviation of the eligible stocks, and the two Z scores are averaged 50% each.

The Normalized Momentum Score is 1 plus the weighted average Z score when that is zero or above, and 1 divided by (1 minus the Z score) when it is below zero, so the score stays positive.

Each stock's weight is its free-float market capitalization (market capitalization of the floating stock, the shares available for trading) multiplied by its Normalized Momentum Score. A stock is capped at the lower of 5% or 5 times its weight in an index based only on free-float market capitalization, and the cap is applied at each semi-annual rebalancing.

When it is reviewed

The index is reconstituted in Jun and Dec. The cut-off dates are 31 May and 30 Nov, and average data for the six months ending the cut-off date is used. Four weeks of prior notice is given.

A buffer on score ranks limits turnover. A current member ranked within the top 75 stays. A non-member ranked within the top 25 is added in place of the lowest-scoring member, and a member ranked beyond 75 is removed.

A stock that leaves the Nifty 500 also leaves the index at the next review. If a member is removed from the Nifty 500 through a corporate action or suspension, an extra reconstitution is started before then.

Base date and value

The index has a base date of 1 Apr 2005 and a base value of 1000. It was launched on 4 Jun 2024.
