About the Nifty100 ESG Sector Leaders

The Nifty100 ESG Sector Leaders index tracks companies from the Nifty 100 that scored well on managing environmental, social and governance (ESG) risk and have no major controversies, chosen within each sector. The number of companies varies. It is maintained by NSE Indices Limited.

How companies are chosen

Only ordinary equity shares of companies in the Nifty 100 at the time of review are eligible. A company is excluded if its ESG score is below 60 (grades B-, C+, C and D), or its controversy score is below 70. It is also excluded if 25% or more of its revenue comes from cigarettes, breweries, weapons, gambling or nuclear power, or if any of its revenue comes from controversial weapons, as disclosed in the segment revenue break-up of its annual report.

Eligible companies are ranked within their sector by ESG score, highest first. Banks and non-banks count as separate sectors. Ties are broken first in favour of existing members, then by six-month average free-float market cap. Free float means the shares available for public trading.

Companies are added down the ranking until they cover 75% of the sector's eligible six-month average free-float market cap. The company that takes the total past 75% is kept if it is already a member. A new company in that position is added if the total before it is under 70%, or if its excess over 75% is smaller than the shortfall it fills. A sector with one eligible company includes it.

How it is weighted

Weights follow free-float market capitalisation, with no stock above 10%. Capping uses closing prices from 3 trading days before the effective date, so a weight can exceed the limit on that date, and weights drift between rebalancings as prices move.

When it is reviewed

The index is reconstituted twice a year, effective from the last trading day of Jun and Dec. Selection uses the six-month average free-float market cap ended May and Nov, and the latest ESG, controversy and business-involvement data at the time of review. Between reviews, a company that leaves the Nifty 100 through suspension, delisting or a scheme of arrangement, or whose controversy score falls below 70, is removed on 5 trading days' notice with no replacement.

Base date and value

The index has a base date of 1 Jan 2014 and a base value of 1000. It was launched on 15 Jun 2020. It held 60 companies on 30 Sep 2026.
