About the Nifty50 Shariah
The Nifty50 Shariah is an index of the Nifty 50 companies that pass a Shariah screen, maintained by NSE Indices Limited. It has no fixed number of companies: 18 on 30 Sep 2026.
How companies are chosen
Each current Nifty 50 company is screened for Shariah compliance, and those that pass form the index. Shariah-compliant products allow followers of the Islamic faith to invest without violating their religious principles.
The screens are run by Taqwaa Advisory and Shariah Investment Solutions (TASIS). The business screen removes companies primarily in conventional financial services (banks, insurance companies, finance and investment companies, stock broking), in food and beverages such as pork, alcohol and tobacco, in vulgar entertainment, in hotels and restaurants providing products or entertainment not permitted under Shariah, and in gambling and narcotic drugs.
The financial screen uses annual consolidated financials: interest-based debt of at most 25% of total assets, interest income plus returns from interest-based investments of at most 2.5% of total income, and receivables plus cash and bank balances of at most 90% of total assets.
How it is weighted
Weights follow free-float market capitalisation, the value of the shares normally expected to be available for trading in the market, with no single stock above 33% and the top 3 stocks together at no more than 62% at the time of rebalancing.
When it is reviewed
Shariah compliance is screened every month. Replacements made in a monthly screening take effect from the last working day of that month.
Base date and value
The index has a base date of 29 Dec 2006 and a base value of 1000. It was launched on 19 Feb 2008.
