About the Nifty Alpha Low-Volatility 30
Nifty Alpha Low-Volatility 30 is an index of 30 stocks from the Nifty 100 and the Nifty Midcap 50, selected for high alpha and low volatility. It is maintained by NSE Indices.
How companies are chosen
A member of the Nifty 100 or the Nifty Midcap 50 at the time of review qualifies only if its stock is available for trading in the derivative segment (F&O) and has a minimum listing history of 1 year.
The 30 stocks with the top combined score on alpha and low volatility are selected. The top 10 stocks on the average percentile score are included without exception, and an existing constituent is excluded if its rank on that score drops below 50.
How it is weighted
Weights come from each stock's alpha and low volatility scores, counted equally, and at each rebalancing a stock is capped at the lower of 5% or 5 times its weight in an index based only on free-float market capitalization (the market value of the shares available for trading).
Alpha is worked out from the previous 12 months of prices: the stock's average daily return, less the sum of the average daily 3 Month MIBOR rate (a reference rate in the money market) and the stock's beta times the Nifty 50's average daily return above that rate. Beta is a measure of the sensitivity of stock returns to market returns (the Nifty 50 here), calculated on the same 12 months.
The low volatility score is the inverse of the standard deviation of the previous 1-year of lognormal daily stock returns.
When it is reviewed
The index is reconstituted twice a year, in Jun and Dec. Weights may drift between rebalancings as prices move.
An extra reconstitution and rebalancing is started if a constituent is suspended, delisted or undergoes a scheme of arrangement. Each quarter the index is also screened against the portfolio concentration norms for ETFs and index funds that SEBI announced on 10 Jan 2019.
Base date and value
The index has a base date of 1 Apr 2005 and a base value of 1000. It was launched on 10 Jul 2017.
