About the BSE Momentum Index
The BSE Momentum Index measures the performance of the 30 companies in the BSE LargeMidCap that exhibit the most persistence in their relative performance, measured by their risk adjusted price momentum score. It is maintained by BSE Index Services Pvt. Ltd.
How companies are chosen
The index draws its companies from the BSE LargeMidCap, a size sub-index of the BSE AllCap.
At each semi-annual rebalancing, a company needs an average daily float-adjusted market capitalization of at least ₹2,000 crore, an annualized traded value of at least ₹1,000 crore and a turnover ratio (annualized traded value divided by average daily float-adjusted market capitalization) of at least 20%. Current members stay eligible at ₹1,600 crore, ₹800 crore and 16%. A company must also have no more than five non-trading days in the past six months.
A stock must have traded for at least ten months before the rebalancing reference date to be included.
Eligible companies are ranked by momentum score. The top 24 are selected, whether or not they are current members. Existing members ranked 25 to 36 are then selected in rank order until the count reaches 30, and if it is still short, non-members are selected in rank order.
How it is weighted
A company's momentum value is its 12-month price change, excluding the most recent month. Where 12 months of price history are not available, nine months are used.
The momentum value is then adjusted by the company's volatility, the standard deviation of its daily price returns over the same period. That risk-adjusted value is turned into a z-score, using its mean and standard deviation across the index universe, and the z-score is capped at ± 3.
With Z as the capped z-score, the momentum score is 1 plus Z when Z is above 0, 1 divided by (1 minus Z) when Z is below 0, and 1 when Z is 0.
Each company is weighted by the product of its float-adjusted market capitalization weight in the eligible index universe and its momentum score. The maximum weight of each security is the lower of 5% and three times its float-adjusted market capitalization weight in the index.
When it is reviewed
The index is rebalanced semiannually in Mar and Sep, effective at market open on the Monday following the third Friday of the month. The universe is set after the close of market on the third Friday of Feb and Aug.
No companies are added between rebalancings, so the number of stocks can fall below 30 after deletions.
Base date and value
The index was launched on 3 Dec 2015, and its values begin on 16 Sep 2005.
