About the Nifty Alpha 50
Nifty Alpha 50 is an index of the 50 companies with the highest alphas among the top 300 listed on NSE by free-float market capitalisation and daily turnover, maintained by NSE Indices Limited.
How companies are chosen
A company must rank within the top 300 by average free-float market capitalisation and average daily turnover over the six months to Feb, May, Aug or Nov, have a listing history of 1 year, and have traded on 100% of days in the last year.
Alpha is calculated for each eligible company from its prices over the trailing 1 year, adjusted for corporate actions, and the companies are ranked from the highest. The top 50 form the index.
A buffer of 100% applies at each review: an existing member that ranks within the top 100 can be retained. Companies with negative alpha are not considered, except that an existing member with negative alpha stays if no company with positive alpha is in the eligible pool.
How it is weighted
Weights are set in proportion to each company's alpha at every rebalancing, so the company with the highest alpha has the highest weight.
When it is reviewed
The index is reviewed every quarter, using data for the six months ending on the last trading day of Feb, May, Aug and Nov. Changes take effect on the last trading day of Mar, Jun, Sep and Dec.
Base date and value
The index has a base date of 31 Dec 2003 and a base value of 1000. It was launched on 19 Nov 2012.
