About the BSE 200

The BSE 200 measures the performance of 200 of the largest and most liquid companies within the BSE 500. The index is maintained by BSE Index Services Pvt. Ltd.

How companies are chosen

The index is derived from the constituents of the BSE 500. Each company is measured on its average daily total market capitalization, its annualized traded value and its trading frequency over the prior six months.

At each rebalancing a company needs an annualized traded value of at least ₹500 crore, or ₹400 crore for a current member, and must have traded on at least 90% of trading days at BSE in the six-month reference period. Annualized traded value is the median of the monthly medians of daily traded values, annualized over 250 trading days in a year.

Companies that pass are ranked by average daily total market capitalization and the top 160 are selected. Existing members ranked 161 to 240 are then added in order of rank until the count reaches 200, and non-members are added in order of rank if the count is still short.

Differential Voting Rights Shares (DVRs) can be included in the index, so it can hold more than 200 stocks while the number of companies stays fixed at 200.

How it is weighted

Constituents are weighted by their float-adjusted market capitalization.

When it is reviewed

The index is rebalanced semiannually, in Jun and Dec.

Base date and value

The index's history is calculated from 2 Jan 1991, and it was launched on 27 May 1994.
