About the BSE Select Business Groups
The BSE Select Business Groups index measures the performance of the top 30 companies from the largest seven business groups in India, selected by free-float market capitalization from the BSE 500, excluding Financial Services companies. It is maintained by BSE Index Services Pvt. Ltd.
How companies are chosen
The universe is the BSE 500. A business group is 2 or more listed companies from different industries that are subsidiaries or associates of, or promoted by, a common promoter company; companies with cross holdings in each other in the same promoter group, or promoted by different entities within the same group, also count. Holding shares in another company does not make a group unless the investor is classified as a promoter by the investee company.
The largest company in each group by 6 month average free-float market capitalization is selected first, and the next 23 companies are ranked on the same measure and added. The index holds at most 30 companies from at most 7 groups.
At reconstitution, a group already in the index stays while it remains in the top 8 business groups by free-float market capitalization. A new group ranked in the top 4 is included, and the lowest-placed existing group leaves.
How it is weighted
Companies are weighted by float-adjusted market capitalization, with a cap of 23% on any one stock and 23% on any one business group.
A company's available float is defined by its Investable Weight Factor, which is reviewed every quarter.
When it is reviewed
The index rebalances semi-annually, effective from the Monday after the third Friday of the sixth and twelfth months. The reference date is after the close on the last trading day of the fourth and tenth months.
Most thematic indices add no stocks between rebalancings. That rule does not apply to this index.
Base date and value
The index was launched on 8 Oct 2024.
