About the Nifty500 Value 50

The Nifty500 Value 50 is an index of 50 companies from the Nifty 500, selected on their value scores. A value score is built from four ratios: earnings to price, book value to price, sales to price and dividend yield.

How companies are chosen

Only Nifty 500 members at the time of review are eligible, with a listing history of at least 1 month. A stock must also rank within the top 400 on both average daily turnover and average daily free-float market capitalisation, over the previous six months ending May and Nov. Free float means the shares available for trading, set from the public shareholding each company reports every quarter.

Each eligible stock gets a Z score on each of the four ratios: the stock's value, minus the mean for the eligible universe, divided by the standard deviation for that universe. The ratios use the latest financial year's data, consolidated where available and standalone otherwise.

The four Z scores are weighted 0.25 each into an average. The value score is 1 plus the average Z score when it is above zero, and 1 divided by (1 minus the average Z score) when it is below zero. The 50 stocks with the highest value scores are selected.

How it is weighted

A stock's weight comes from multiplying its free float market cap by its value score.

Each sector is capped at 25%. Each stock is capped at the lower of 5% or 3 times its weight based only on free float market capitalization. Capping is done at the semi-annual rebalancing.

When it is reviewed

Reconstitution is semi-annual, in Jun and Dec, using six months of data ending May and Nov. The top 25 stocks by value score are compulsorily included, and existing members ranked beyond 75 are compulsorily excluded.

An ad-hoc reconstitution follows a suspension, delisting or scheme of arrangement of a member. Each quarter the index is also screened against SEBI's portfolio concentration norms for ETFs and index funds announced on 10 Jan 2019.

Base date and value

The index has a base date of 1 Apr 2005 and a base value of 1000. It was launched on 24 Oct 2018.
