About the BSE Commodities

BSE Commodities is the sector index for companies in the BSE AllCap whose macro-economic indicator is Commodities, the basic materials sector. Weighted by float-adjusted market capitalization, it is maintained by BSE Index Services Pvt. Ltd. and is one of 11 indices in the BSE AllCap sector family.

How companies are chosen

A company belongs to this index if the common India Industry Classification Structure places it under the Commodities macro-economic indicator, the only indicator this index uses. Assignment is made from the BSE AllCap each Sep, and all eligible share classes of a company go to the same index. It held 210 companies on 30 Sep 2026.

The BSE AllCap itself requires a listing history of at least six months (one month for IPOs and spin-offs), and a trading frequency of at least 80% over the prior six months.

If a company's classification changes between reconstitutions, the move is made at the next quarterly share update.

How it is weighted

Float-adjusted market capitalization sets each weight: market value counted only for the shares available for public trading. Sector indices add two caps, applied quarterly: one company at most 33%, and the top three companies together at most 63%. Excess weight goes proportionately to the uncapped stocks.

When it is reviewed

The index is reconstituted each Sep, effective at market open on the Monday following the third Friday, using data as of the last trading day of Jul. Reviews follow in Dec, Mar and Jun. Between reconstitutions, a company whose average daily total market capitalization falls below ₹50 crore is removed, with the check made in Mar.

Base date and value

The index was launched on 15 Apr 2015. Its first value date and base date are 16 Sep 2005, with a base value of 1000. It was named BSE Basic Materials until the change effective after the close of 16 Sep 2022. It is calculated in rupees and US dollars.
