About the Nifty100 ESG

The Nifty100 ESG Index measures the performance of companies in the Nifty 100 with each company's weight tilted by its environmental, social and governance (ESG) risk score. It held 79 companies on 30 Sep 2026, and NSE Indices Limited maintains it.

How companies are chosen

The number of constituents is variable. The universe is the Nifty 100 at the time of each review, and only ordinary equity shares count.

A company must have an ESG score, which measures its performance on the environmental, social and governance front. NSE Sustainability Ratings & Analytics Limited provides the research.

Companies with a controversy score below 70 are excluded, as are companies engaged in tobacco, alcohol, controversial weapons and gambling. Controversial weapons are chemical weapons, biological weapons, anti-personnel mines and cluster bombs.

How it is weighted

Each company's ESG score becomes a Z score, its distance from the parent index mean in standard deviations, and then a normalised score. The weight is that normalised score multiplied by the square root of the company's free-float market capitalisation. Free float is the part of a company's shares available for trading, set from the public shareholding it reports each quarter.

A sector is capped at its weight in the parent index if that is 25% or more, and at 25% if it is lower. A company is capped at the lower of 8% or 5 times its weight on free-float market capitalisation alone.

When it is reviewed

The index is reconstituted twice a year, in Jun and Dec, on data for the six months ending May and Nov. Between reviews, a constituent whose controversy score falls below 70 is removed and not replaced.

Base date and value

The index has a base date of 1 Apr 2011 and a base value of 1000. It launched on 27 Mar 2018.
