About the Nifty500 Ahimsa
The Nifty500 Ahimsa Index tracks companies from the Nifty 500 whose business practices align with the principle of Ahimsa (non-violence), as categorised by Ahimsagain Foundation. It held 336 companies on 30 Sep 2026. NSE Indices Limited maintains the index.
How companies are chosen
The index was developed with Ahimsagain Foundation under its Ahimsa Investment Movement framework, which judges how far a company's products, services and business practices align with Ahimsa principles. Stocks in the Nifty 500 at the time of review are eligible.
The framework places every company in one of three bands, Red, Orange or Green, by how directly and how much it is involved in harm to animals: Red is the most involvement and Green the least. Orange and Red companies are excluded, and all remaining companies are selected.
Red covers businesses that directly harm animals or earn a significant share of revenue from animal-based products, with typical examples such as meat, poultry, fish, eggs and dairy. Red also covers harmful vice products, such as alcohol, tobacco, weapons and gambling.
Orange covers businesses with one smaller animal-based product line, and most finance companies; its typical examples include banks, NBFCs, broking, asset-management and holding companies.
How it is weighted
Each stock is weighted by its free-float market capitalization.
When it is reviewed
The index is reviewed in Mar and Sep, using data ended Jan and Jul respectively. A stock that has left the Nifty 500 leaves the index at the review.
Between reviews, a constituent that the foundation moves to the Red band is removed with no replacement.
Base date and value
The index's values are calculated from a base date of 1 Apr 2016 (base value 1000); it was launched on 10 Jul 2026.
