About the BSE Metal Index
The BSE Metal Index is made up of the BSE 500 companies classified in the metal, metal products and mining sector.
How companies are chosen
The index draws on the BSE 500 and takes companies in the basic industries listed for it: iron and steel, zinc, pig iron, diversified metals, aluminium, precious metals, sponge iron, trading of minerals, copper, industrial minerals, ferro and silica manganese, and iron and steel products.
Eligible stocks are ranked by average float-adjusted market capitalization within the sector, and are taken until they cover 90% of the sector's average float-adjusted market capitalization. A company must also have a trading frequency of at least 90% in the preceding six months.
A buffer of 2% limits turnover: a non-constituent is added only if it falls within 88% coverage, and a constituent is dropped only if it falls above 92% coverage. At each selection the index is topped up to at least 10 companies by retaining or adding stocks in order of that rank.
How it is weighted
The BSE Metal Index is weighted by float-adjusted market capitalization. Investable weight factors define the available float for a company.
When it is reviewed
The index is rebalanced twice a year, in Jun and Dec. New companies are added only at those two rebalancings. Changes take effect at the open of the Monday following the third Friday of Mar, Jun, Sep and Dec.
In Mar and Sep the quarterly share update can drop companies without replacing them, even if the count falls below 10.
Base date and value
The index was launched on 23 Aug 2004, and its first value date is 1 Feb 1999.
