About the BSE 500 Momentum 50
The BSE 500 Momentum 50 measures the performance of the 50 companies in the BSE 500 with the highest momentum scores, a measure of a stock's price change over the past 12 months adjusted for the volatility of its daily returns. It is a strategy index maintained by BSE Index Services Pvt. Ltd.
How companies are chosen
The universe is the BSE 500. A common stock is eligible if its annualized traded value ranks in the top 450, its turnover ratio is at least 20%, and it traded on every working day of the reference period. Turnover ratio is annualized traded value divided by average daily float-adjusted market capitalization, both measured over the prior six months. Float-adjusted market capitalization counts only the shares available for public trading.
Eligible companies with a listing history of at least one year are ranked by momentum score. The top 30 are selected directly. Existing members ranked 31 to 70 then fill places in order of rank until the count of 50 is reached, and if places remain, non-members are taken in order of rank.
Momentum score starts from the 12-month price change to the reference date, divided by the standard deviation of the stock's daily price returns over the same period. That value is converted to a z-score, a measure of distance from the average across the universe, and the z-score is capped at plus or minus 3. A z-score above 0 gives a momentum score of 1 plus the z-score. Below 0, the score is 1 divided by 1 minus the z-score. At 0, the score is 1.
How it is weighted
Each company is weighted by the product of its float-adjusted market capitalization and its momentum score, with a cap of 4% on any one stock. The caps are applied quarterly. Index shares are set from closing prices on the Wednesday before the second Friday of the rebalancing month.
When it is reviewed
The index is rebalanced quarterly, at market open on the Monday after the third Friday of Mar, Jun, Sep and Dec. The reference date is the last day of the month before. No company is added between rebalancings, so the count can fall below 50 after a deletion. Companies added to the Graded Surveillance Measure list are dropped monthly.
Base date and value
The index has a base date of 20 Jun 2005 and a base value of 1000. It was launched on 20 May 2025, with values calculated back to the base date.
