About the Nifty India Consumption
The Nifty India Consumption Index is made up of 30 companies listed on NSE that represent the domestic consumption sector, which includes consumer non-durables, healthcare, auto, telecom services, pharmaceuticals, hotels, and media and entertainment. It is maintained by NSE Indices Limited.
How companies are chosen
A company must form part of the consumption sector and earn more than 50% of its revenue from domestic markets, other than export income.
Companies must be part of the Nifty 500 at the time of review. Where fewer than 10 eligible stocks of a sector are in the Nifty 500, the shortfall comes from stocks in the top 800 by both average daily turnover and average daily full market capitalisation over the previous six months.
A company must have traded on at least 90% of days in the last six months and have a listing history of at least 1 month at the cutoff date.
How it is weighted
The index uses a periodic capped free-float market capitalisation method. A constituent's weight is capped at 10% when the index is rebalanced or its constituents change, and the cap is reapplied each quarter, effective from the last trading day of Mar, Jun, Sep and Dec. Between those dates a weight can rise above 10% with price movement.
When it is reviewed
The index is rebalanced semi-annually. The cutoff dates are 31 Jan and 31 Jul each year, and average data for the six months ending on the cutoff date is used. Four weeks of notice is given to the market before a change.
Reconstitution takes effect in Mar and Sep.
Base date and value
The index has a base date of 2 Jan 2006 and a base value of 1000. It was launched on 12 Jul 2011.
