About the Nifty Infrastructure
Nifty Infrastructure is an index of up to 30 companies listed on NSE that belong to telecom, power, ports, air, roads, railways, shipping and other utility services. It is maintained by NSE Indices Limited.
How companies are chosen
A company must be part of the Nifty 500 at the time of review, must belong to the infrastructure sector, and must be allowed to trade in the F&O segment. Its trading frequency must be at least 90% in the last six months.
A company not yet in the index is added only if its free-float market capitalisation is at least 1.5 times that of the smallest member. Where fewer than 10 eligible stocks in a sector sit within the Nifty 500, the shortfall is drawn from the top 800 stocks.
The eligible basic industries range from power, ports, roads, railway wagons, shipping, refineries, cement, civil construction and oil exploration to telecom services, and also take in hospitals and education.
How it is weighted
Each stock is weighted by its free-float market capitalisation, with no single stock above 20% at the time of rebalancing. The 20% cap and the limit of 30 companies apply from 27 Sep 2019; the cap was 34% before.
The 20% cap is reapplied each quarter, on the last trading day of Mar, Jun, Sep and Dec. Between those dates a stock's weight can rise above it as prices move.
When it is reviewed
The index is rebalanced semi-annually. The cut-off dates are 31 Jan and 31 Jul, and the average data for the six months ending the cut-off date is used. The market gets four weeks' prior notice of a change.
Base date and value
The index launched on 7 Aug 2007. Its base date is 1 Jan 2004 and its base value is 1000.
