About the Nifty Smallcap 50
The Nifty Smallcap 50 is an index of 50 smallcap companies, built to capture the movement of the smallcap segment of the market. It is drawn from the Nifty Smallcap 250, the companies ranked 251 to 500 in the Nifty 500, and managed by NSE Indices Limited.
How companies are chosen
A company must be in the Nifty Smallcap 250 and rank within the top 150 on both average daily full market capitalization and average daily turnover over the previous six months. From that group, the 50 with the largest 6 month average free-float market capitalization are selected. Free float is the part of a company's shares that is available for trading.
At each review, a company not in the index joins if it ranks within the top 30 on 6 month average free-float market capitalization, or if its free-float market capitalization is at least 1.5 times that of the smallest index constituent. A member leaves if its free-float rank falls beyond 70, or if it leaves the Nifty Smallcap 250 or ranks beyond 150 there on average full market capitalization or turnover.
How it is weighted
The index uses the free-float market capitalization method: its level reflects the total free-float market value of all its stocks relative to a base market capitalization value.
When it is reviewed
The review is semi-annual, using data for six months ending Jan and Jul, and replacements take effect from the last trading day of Mar and Sep.
Base date and value
The index was launched on 1 Apr 2016, with a base date of 1 Apr 2005 and a base value of 1000.
