About the Nifty Smallcap 100

The Nifty Smallcap 100 is an index of 100 tradable small cap stocks listed on the National Stock Exchange, maintained by NSE Indices Limited. It is designed to reflect the behaviour and performance of the small cap segment.

How companies are chosen

The index includes all companies from the Nifty Smallcap 50, and any company added to the Nifty Smallcap 50 joins it too. The remaining companies come from the top 150 companies by full market capitalisation in the Nifty Smallcap 250: those ranked in the top 70 by average daily turnover are included.

A company is excluded if its full market capitalisation rank falls below 180 among the Nifty Smallcap 250 constituents. A company in the top 180 by market capitalisation is excluded if its average daily turnover rank falls below 130, and one that leaves the Nifty Smallcap 250 leaves this index.

The Nifty Smallcap 250 is the remaining 250 companies of the Nifty 500, ranked 251 to 500. The Nifty Smallcap 50 keeps the top 50 companies by 6 month average free float market capitalization, taken from the top 150 companies in the Nifty Smallcap 250 on both average daily full market capitalization and average daily turnover.

How it is weighted

The index uses the free float market capitalization method, which counts only the shares available for trading, and its level reflects the total free float market value of its stocks relative to a base market capitalization value.

When it is reviewed

The index is re-balanced twice a year. The cut-off dates are 31 Jan and 31 Jul, and average data for the six months ending the cut-off date is considered. The market gets four weeks' notice of a change.

Base date and value

The index has a base date of 1 Jan 2004 and a base value of 1000. It was launched on 30 Mar 2011.
