About the Nifty Midcap 50
The Nifty Midcap 50 captures the movement of the midcap segment of the market through 50 companies drawn from the Nifty Midcap 150. The index is maintained by NSE Indices Limited.
How companies are chosen
Members come from the Nifty Midcap 150, which holds the companies ranked 101 to 250 by full market capitalisation in the Nifty 500. Of those, the 100 ranking highest on both average daily full market capitalization and average daily turnover over the previous six months are eligible.
From the eligible companies, the 50 with the higher six-month average free float market capitalization are selected, with a preference to companies in NSE’s Futures & Options (F&O) segment.
An F&O company in the Nifty Midcap 150 is added if its six-month average free float market capitalization ranks among the top 30. A non-F&O stock is added if its free float market capitalization is at least 1.5 times that of the smallest non-F&O member. An eligible F&O stock outside the index replaces the smallest non-F&O member.
A member is dropped if its six-month average free float rank falls below 70 within the eligible 100, if it ranks beyond 100 in the Nifty Midcap 150 on six-month average full market capitalization or turnover, or if it leaves the Nifty Midcap 150.
How it is weighted
Each company is weighted by its free float market capitalization: the index level reflects the total free float market value of its stocks relative to a base market capitalization value. Free float refers to the shares normally expected to be available for trading in the market.
When it is reviewed
The index is reviewed semi-annually on data for the six months to Jan and Jul. Replacements take effect from the last trading day of Mar and Sep respectively.
Base date and value
The base date is 1 Jan 2004 and the base value is 1000.
