About the BSE SENSEX Next 50
The BSE SENSEX Next 50 is an index of the 50 companies in the BSE 100 that are not members of the BSE SENSEX 50. The BSE SENSEX 50 is chosen from the BSE 100 companies that have derivative contracts, by float-adjusted market capitalization. Both are maintained by BSE Index Services Pvt. Ltd.
How companies are chosen
The index has no size or liquidity screen of its own. The BSE 100 is drawn from the BSE LargeMidCap and holds 100 companies, ranked by six-month average daily float-adjusted market capitalization.
Two limits tie the index to derivatives, meaning stocks that have futures or options contracts. A company without derivative contracts cannot weigh more than 5% of the index in any one share class, and all such companies together cannot weigh more than 20%.
When a limit is broken, a stock above 5% is passed over and the next eligible stock by six-month average daily float-adjusted market capitalization is taken. If the 20% limit is still broken, the lowest-ranked company without derivatives is replaced by the highest-ranked eligible one that has them. The steps repeat until both limits hold, and a stock dropped this way returns only when it has derivative contracts.
Differential voting rights (DVR) shares may be included when the ordinary shares of the company are in the index universe and the DVR shares pass the liquidity criteria on their own.
How it is weighted
Companies are weighted by float-adjusted market capitalization, which counts only the shares available for public trading.
When it is reviewed
The index is reconstituted twice a year, in Jun and Dec. The BSE 100's selection data cover the six months before the rebalancing reference date.
Base date and value
The index launched on 27 Feb 2017. Its first value date is 16 Dec 2005, and its base value is 7,000. It is calculated in Indian rupees and US dollars.
