About Nifty Midcap 150 index funds and ETFs

Nifty Midcap 150 index funds and ETFs are funds that hold the 150 mid-sized companies of the Nifty Midcap 150 in the index's own weights, so their return follows the index less costs.

The index they track

The Nifty Midcap 150 holds the companies ranked 101 to 250 by full market capitalisation within the Nifty 500. NSE Indices maintains it. It is weighted by free float market capitalisation: company size counted only on the shares that can trade, with promoters' holdings taken out. It is reviewed twice a year, with cut-off dates of 31 Jan and 31 Jul. Its base date is 1 Apr 2005 and it was launched on 1 Apr 2016.

Index funds and ETFs

Units of an index fund are issued and redeemed by the fund house at that day's NAV, the value of one unit. ETF units change hands on the exchange, so their price can drift from NAV. The ETF table shows that drift as premium or discount: the median, across the month's trading days, of each day's close divided by that day's NAV, less one.

Tracking difference and tracking error

Tracking difference is the fund's return over the year less the index's; costs usually push it below zero. The after fee figure adds the year's average expense ratio back, to show the part of the gap the fee does not explain. Tracking error states, as a yearly figure, how much the daily returns differed.

Costs, size and order

The expense ratio is the fee charged each year as a share of assets, taken from NAV daily. The index fund table shows either direct plans or regular plans, which carry a distributor's commission. Size is assets under management at month-end. Funds are listed by tracking difference nearest zero, the lower expense ratio first where two are level.

Buffers at each review

A company joins if it ranks in the top 225 of the Nifty 500 by full market capitalisation, or is at least 1.5 times the size of the smallest member. A member leaves only if it falls below rank 275 or out of the Nifty 500.
