About the Nifty500 Multicap Momentum Quality 50
The Nifty500 Multicap Momentum Quality 50 is an index of the top 50 stocks drawn from the Nifty 500, spanning large cap, mid cap and small cap companies and ranked on a combination of momentum and quality factors. It is maintained by NSE Indices Limited.
How companies are chosen
Eligible companies are those in the Nifty 500 at the time of review with a minimum listing history of 1 year.
They are split into three segment universes: the Nifty 100 for large cap, the Nifty Midcap 150 for midcap and the Nifty Smallcap 250 for smallcap. The index takes the top 10 stocks from the large cap segment, the top 15 from the midcap segment and the top 25 from the smallcap segment.
Within each segment, companies with more than 20% of promoters' shares pledged, and those in the bottom 10 percentile on turnover ratio, are ineligible. The turnover ratio is calculated by dividing 6 months ADT by 6 months average FFMcap.
Stocks are ranked on an aggregate percentile score, which is 50% of the percentile momentum score plus 50% of the percentile quality score.
How it is weighted
The momentum score rests on each company's 6-month and 12-month price return, adjusted for volatility. It averages the two periods' Z scores, 50% each. (A stock's 12-month Z score is its 12-month momentum ratio minus the mean of those ratios across the eligible segment universe, divided by their standard deviation. The 6-month Z score is worked out the same way.)
The quality score favours a high return on equity, a low debt-to-equity ratio and low EPS growth variability over the previous 5 years. The debt-to-equity ratio is left out for financial services companies.
A stock's weight is its free float market cap multiplied by its composite factor score, 50% normalized momentum score plus 50% quality score. Each stock is capped at 5%, applied semi-annually at reconstitution.
When it is reviewed
The index is rebalanced and reconstituted in Jun and Dec, using data ending the last trading day of May and Nov.
An existing member stays if it ranks within the top 15 in the large cap segment, the top 23 in midcap or the top 38 in smallcap, and is excluded if it ranks beyond those. An unscheduled review follows if a member leaves the Nifty 500 because of a corporate action such as a delisting, or a suspension by the exchange.
Base date and value
The index has a base date of 1 Apr 2005 and a base value of 1000, and launched on 4 Sep 2024.
