About the Nifty500 Low Volatility 50
The Nifty500 Low Volatility 50 is an index of the 50 companies from the Nifty 500 whose prices varied least over the previous year, measured by the standard deviation of their price returns (how widely the returns spread around their average). It is maintained by NSE Indices Limited.
How companies are chosen
The universe is the stocks that are, or are about to become, members of the Nifty 500 at the time of review. A stock needs a listing history of at least 1 year. A stock not available for trading in the futures and options segment and not already in the index is excluded if, in the past 6 months to the cut-off date, it hit the upper or lower price circuit (the day's price limit) on 20% or more of the trading days. A stock that hits both circuits on one day counts as two instances.
Companies with more than 20% of promoters' shares pledged are excluded. So are the bottom 10 percentile of stocks by 6-month average daily turnover, and the bottom 10 percentile by turnover ratio, within the universe.
Volatility is computed for each eligible stock from 1 year of trailing prices adjusted for corporate actions. Low volatility is the inverse of the standard deviation of the previous 1-year log returns, and the 50 stocks ranked highest on it are selected.
How it is weighted
A stock's weight is its free-float market capitalization (the value of the shares that can actually trade) multiplied by its low volatility score. The score starts from a Z score, (x - μ)/σ, where x is the stock's low volatility, μ the mean and σ the standard deviation of low volatility across the eligible universe. The score is 1 plus the Z score where the average Z score is above 0, and 1 divided by (1 minus the Z score) where it is below 0.
Each stock is capped at the lower of 5% or 5 times its weight based on free-float market capitalization alone. The cap is applied at each reconstitution, and weights drift with prices in between.
When it is reviewed
The index is rebalanced and reconstituted twice a year, in Jun and Dec, using six months of data ending on 31 May and 30 Nov. Four weeks' notice is given to the market. A current member stays if it ranks within the top 75 on low volatility score, and is removed if it ranks beyond 75. The 25 highest-ranked non-members come in, replacing the lowest-ranked members.
A stock that leaves the Nifty 500 leaves this index at the next review. An extra review is triggered if a member is removed from the Nifty 500 through a corporate action such as a scheme of arrangement or delisting, or is suspended by the exchange. Each quarter the index is also screened against SEBI's portfolio concentration norms for ETFs and index funds, announced on 10 Jan 2019.
Base date and value
The base date is 1 Apr 2005 and the base value is 1000. The index was launched on 20 Dec 2024.
