About the Nifty Services Sector
The Nifty Services Sector Index is designed to reflect the behaviour and performance of services sector companies such as software, banks, telecommunication, power, media, courier and shipping. It comprises 30 companies listed on NSE and is maintained by NSE Indices Limited.
How companies are chosen
Candidates must be part of the Nifty 500 at the time of review. Where a sector has fewer than 10 eligible stocks in the Nifty 500, the shortfall is filled from the top 800 stocks ranked by average daily turnover and average daily full market capitalisation over the previous six months.
A company must be part of the services sector, have a trading frequency of at least 90% in the last six months and a listing history of at least 1 month at the cut-off date. The final 30 are picked by free-float market capitalization. Free float counts only the shares normally expected to be available for trading, leaving out those reported under the promoter category.
How it is weighted
The index is computed on the free float market capitalization method: its level reflects the total free float market value of all its stocks relative to a base market capitalization value. Each stock's weight follows its free-float market capitalization.
When it is reviewed
The index is rebalanced twice a year, with cut-off dates of 31 Jan and 31 Jul, using average data for the six months ending on the cut-off date. The market gets four weeks' notice before a change.
Base date and value
The index has a base date of 1 Jun 1999 and a base value of 1000.
